We are all thinking the same thing. What on Earth just happened and how did it happen? If you do not follow the BBC series ‘Sherlock’ I suggest you buy series 1, watch series 2 on BBC I player and then come back.
I am just going to state now, this blog does contain spoilers so please don’t read on if you want everything to be a surprise when you watch it.
In the finale episode of series 2 ‘The Reichenbach Fall’ Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock Holmes finds himself competing with his arch rival Jim Moriarty played by Andrew Scott. The two ‘sociopaths’ try to out-do one and other and in the end this causes a death. Moriarty caused havoc by creating a code that allowed him to enter anywhere and everywhere he wanted which could of meant he could steal anything he wanted. However the things he could steal where not worth as much as the code itself so he used this by planting it on Holmes and then tells assassins that if they want the code they must go to Holmes as he has it on him. This causes slight mayhem to Holmes. As well as this Moriarty planted several things into people’s minds to give the impression Holmes was in fact a fraud and a villain after all. This led the police force to arrest Holmes. However Holmes escaped custardy of the police and gave Moriarty what he wanted, Holmes to be considered a felon.
Further down the line where things take twists and turns, even Dr. Watson, Martin Freeman, begins to have slight question on whether he is actually a genius or a fraud. Towards the end of the finale Holmes meets Moriarty upon a roof top and they discuss things. Moriarty is aware that Holmes has figured out the code; however Moriarty tells Holmes that if he doesn’t jump off the edge of the building his close friends will be executed. This is when Moriarty explains that there is no code and he broke into those places by using assistance of security guards etc. Holmes confronts Moriarty and states that he will be able to get Moriarty to cancel his orders but then Moriarty shoots himself leaving Holmes no other action to prevent the murder of his closest friends other than to jump off the building.
This is where things get confusing.
Holmes steps up to the ledge just as Watson arrives, he then calls Watson to discuss his last words and admits to being a fraud even though he is in fact not. Holmes tells Watson that this is his ‘note’ meaning his suicide note and then says goodbye to his closest friend. Watson then sees Holmes jump off the edge of a several storied building. Watson instantly runs towards where he would have landed but on the way toward the body he gets knocked over by someone on a bike. Here I think Watson got drugged by the man on the bike, who could be under Holmes’ order. This led to Watson collapsing to the ground and become dazed, he stayed on the ground for a moment. When you see Holmes’ body hit the floor there is a barricaded area to his right, this is where I think a crash mat of some sort would have been used by Holmes. I believe that Holmes knew what Moriarty was going to require Holmes to do and therefore had the mat in place. By Watson being out of view of where Holmes’ body would have hit the floor it gave the impression he would have hit nothing but solid concrete however I think Holmes jumped onto a mat and while Watson was drugged and dazed he ran back to the top of the building and pushed Moriarty off the building so that there was a body on the floor. I think that due to Watson being drugged and seeing Holmes jump off but not hit the floor it created the illusion that the body on the floor was Holmes’ when in fact it was Moriarty’s.
In a scene leading up to this cliff hanger Holmes met with Molly Hooper, an employee at the morgue who has a crush on Holmes. This is where Holmes finally expressed his inner feelings and told Molly what his plan was and what he required her to do. When the body from the suicide came in, she needed to identify the body as Holmes so the assassins would leave his closest friends in peace. The body was of course Moriarty’s.
An emotional few minutes pass by on screen when Watson and Mrs. Hudson are standing by Holmes’ grave. Watsons gives an emotional goodbye and as he is leaving the grave yard there is an onlooker which he cannot see. This onlooker was Sherlock Holmes.
This is only my opinion on what happened. What do you all think?
